"Cinderella: Sometimes people leave you. Halfway through the wood. ("No One is Alone", Act 2)
Into the Woods has many characters deal with loss. Loss can be as simple and quick as a missed phone call or as life altering as losing a loved one, a relationship, or a job--
"You are unlocking the front door of your house, and you hear the phone ringing inside. You were expecting a call about going to a concert with a friend who had an extra ticket. You run to the phone and pick it up... 'Beeeeepppp' No, no, no.... (DENIAL) Rats! Couldn't they have waited just one more second?' You hurriedly call your friend back--busy signal. 'GRRR... (ANGER) You plop into the nearest chair and sulk. (DEPRESSION) "If only I hadn't stopped for that Frappuccino I would have gotten here earlier. Now, they'll ask someone else. Try to dial friend again, chanting in your head, 'Please god, let them answer, I'll go to church for the next 2 weekends. (BARGAINING). Still busy. 'Well...Mary has never been to one of her concerts, ever. Maybe I'll see if I can go to the beach this weekend instead. (ACCEPTANCE).

REAL LIFE HELP
If viewing or writing about Into the Woods stirred up emotions, or you remember what I said about handling grief and need more support, here is a very short book that I strongly recommend (even licensed spiritual practitioners recommend it). How To Survive the Loss of a Love ( or a job, or pet, or friend or relative or loss of a home, etc...) click title for LINK to Amazon. Customer Review "This book described to me EXACTLY what I was going through. It did not seek to re-frame the experience within the author's religious views. It did not seek to impose a decision or a philosophy on me. It did not try to get me to DO anything. It simply described exactly what was happening, and it did it in a way that made it okay for me to feel the way I was feeling. The book is formatted in pairs of facing pages. On the left hand page is straightforward prose; on the right hand pages (with a few exceptions) are short, original poems. This presentation I found extremely powerful. The poems connect in a way that the prose can't; and the prose lends strength and validity and concrete information to the feelings expressed in the poetry. The combined effect is one of knowledge and empathy. In other words, reading this book is like sitting down and talking with a wise, kind friend." |
